Great Moments in "Conservative" Stupidity: Ronald Reagan and the threat of invasion from Nicaragua

Every once in a while, right-wing trolls show up here at the school-yard and try to bait me with empty insults from their anonymous selves. It makes me feel a little queasy to tell you the truth. You know how a fly will bash itself again and again against a window, unable to comprehend the whole concept of see-through glass? That's how I feel about these "conservatives" who just spew stupid nonsense again and again and again and imagine that it hurts me when they insult me. And it's horrifying to think that there are creatures, humans like us in every respect, whose mental capacities are strained mightily to keep them functioning slightly above insect level.

When these idiots show up here, I just think of the decade-upon-decade of utter stupidity that their demographic has fallen for over the years. The asinine fears and threats that they've always tried to shriek into our ears. I think about how they've been wrong, wrong, wrong, about pretty much everything, and then I tend to delete their empty, going nowhere, accomplishing nothing snickers and ravings.

Since I can't think of anything new to write about today, I thought I'd remind people (or bring to their attention if they missed it the first time) just one example of this sort of stupidity. I bring to you today, Ronald Reagan's attempt to portray tiny Nicaragua, which had just freed itself from the US-puppet Somoza's murderous kleptocracy, as a threat to the United States:

Reagan also reminded the Clements supporters that when he urged military support for the rebels seeking to overthrow Nicaragua's Marxist government, he warned that Nicaragua was only a two-day drive from Texas.

He said that "Communist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua has made a lot of mistakes, but even they know better than to get themselves in a tangle with a bunch of Texans.

"Even with all the tanks and guns from the Soviet Union, my guess is that the Sandinistas would make it about as far as the shopping center in Pecos before Roger Staubach came out of retirement, teamed up with some off-duty Texas Rangers and the front four of the Dallas Cowboys and pushed the Sandinistas down the river, out across the Gulf and right back to Havana where they belong."

Staubach, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, was master of ceremonies at the rally.

It was insulting garbage then and it's revolting garbage now. And notice how, as with everything else, these "conservatives" want to have their cake and eat it too. Reagan was shameless enough to try to instill fear and terror in the minds of US-Americans, while at the same time stupidly boasting how easily the could be beaten by a few US "he-men."

In case this whole Sandinistas thing was before your time, do check out this link about the extent of US state terrorism against Nicaragua. Be sure to check out the gruesome accounts of atrocities committed by Reagan's Contra rebels against innocent Nicaraguan civilians, and then remember that this senile piece-of-shit Reagan got a hero's send-off when he finally croaked.

It's too late for Reagan, but there's still time for harper. It's still possible to work to get stephen harper imprisoned for the rest of his life for war crimes. There's no statute of limitations on this stuff. harper, Obama, bush II, Paul Martin, Jean Chretien, Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, Cheney, .... all this vermin should be treated as the torturing, blood-soaked monsters that they are. And their fanboys' protests to the contrary should be treated with scorn and derision.

Perhaps we should create a place modelled after the Hell that these religious morons and hypocrites profess to believe in and put them there for the rest of their lives.

I am dumbfounded when I discover that some otherwise normal person in my sphere of existence turns out to vote conservative and believe the things the conservatives tell them. Of course they are the same people who think Big Brother and the Kardashians are entertainment, and believe all the advertising they see during those lost hours.
I read "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman when I was a teenager and it scared the hell out of me. I was brought up with newspapers and a dictionary and an atlas and several volumes of the encyclopedia at the dinner table every night. We looked for answers to our questions and our questions always begot more questions. It took me a long time to learn that not everyone was so lucky.
I think things are even worse than when I was a teenager.

Hey, wasn't Reagan the guy who sold weapons to a terror-supporting Islamofascist theocracy? Why, yes it was!

Just read an article the other day about how Latin America's overall real wealth and living standards are rising for the first time in generations. I'm sure the social democratic orientation of virtually all of the region's governments and America's fading influence there are sheer coincidences.

karen,

I don't know about things having gotten worse. I was watching a lot of "Happy Days" and Much-Music back in the day.

I only got serious about stuff when I was 26 or 27.

What has gotten worse, and Reagan played a big part in making it happen, has been the celebration of stupidity since 1980. Archie Bunker decided he was mad as hell and wasn't going to take it anymore. And some slick public relations people tried to make him out as having been a victim and enough people (mostly just like him) bought into it.

thwap said...

Sir Francis,

Yeah. He didn't negotiate with terrorists. He sold them weapons.

Latin America is in recovery mode, but as we can see from Honduras and Colombia, the death squads are still a very real possibility.

.....and then of course there's the Left's genius moment called Communism in the form of Communist Russia which killed God knows how many millions and MacKenzie King who knowingly sent Jews back to Nazi Germany and a succession of of Liberal PMs who oversaw the destruction of native culture right here in our own country. The Right hardly holds a monopoly over such stupidity.

Fuck-off shit-head.

Show me a US "conservative" who adores Reagan. You wouldn't have to look too hard.

Show me a Canadian leftist who is enamoured with the USSR. You'd have to look much harder. Even among the Marxists there'd be Trotskyite critics.

And the fact that you called MacKenzie King a leftist shows that you have your head completely up your ass. You don't even know what the terms mean. You're one of those mouth-breathing cretins who think the Toronto Star is the "Red Star" and the NDP are dirty commies and you're the sort of insect-brained waste of skin I was talking about.

Yes! Reading that made me lol and turned what has been a rather stressful day into one that at least had a chuckle!

Happy New Year!!

"...you called MacKenzie King a leftist..."
Nope.

"You're one of those mouth-breathing cretins who think the Toronto Star is the "Red Star" and the NDP are dirty commies..."

I do? Wow.. you must be clairvoyant.

Look, there's no need to get pissy and engage in name-calling when you encounter an opinion contrary to yours. Grow up or I will fuck you up.....your choice.

LOL

Oh man, this night is getting better and better. Watch out thwap, don't mess with the west. Hahahahahaha..

WWU,

I'm posting your stupid crap for the entertainment value.

"Nope." (You write, denying you ever called MacKenzie-King a leftist.)

Yep.

Here you go ...

".....and then of course there's the Left's genius moment called Communism in the form of Communist Russia which killed God knows how many millions and MacKenzie King who knowingly sent Jews back to Nazi Germany and a succession of of Liberal PMs who oversaw the destruction of native culture right here in our own country."

When you use a sentence to criticize something, provide and example, and then add another example in the same sentence, it means that it's another example of the thing you're criticizing. If you don't know how to use sentences, stop writing comments on people's blogs. You're supposed to be a teacher????

"Look, there's no need to get pissy and engage in name-calling when you encounter an opinion contrary to yours."

It's just that people like you make me sick though!

"Grow up or I will fuck you up.....your choice."

You want to make those online threats a little more specific shit-head?

There you go, telling me to grow up, right before resorting to threats of violence because I was rude to you.

You're the dude who told the people suffering at Attawapiskat to stop whining and get a job. And then you wonder why I treat you with contempt.

Omar,

Oh yeah. This guy has a history of this sorta crap.

Hope you decent year in 2012.

Did you happen to hear Harper's New Year message on CBC radio this morning? All the usual and sooo predictable garbage about how strong our economy and jobs prospects are compared to other countries and giving thanks to the military and all they supposedly to. That was it. Less then a minute of less then inspirational election campaign style neocon fucking rhetoric. I hate this clown. And I hate the clowns who support him even more. Mudville. It's where we reside now and it's more than embarrassing.

(WV: desto. Just needed a 'de' as the first two letters to be perfect)

Thank goodness I missed it. I think the scum-bag has enough on the ball to know it's all going south, so he's not wasting much time spewing lies that will only be used against him later.

Plus, he probably jerked-off alone all Christmas and he's dejected.

Coming from a racist your comments mean ever so much to me.

Way Way Up said...

Yeah much better to focus on a badly-written sentence than to acknowledge that Right-wing governments hardly hold a monopoly on oppression. Nice. And when it's pointed out, of course don't acknowledge....merely run your mouth and swear.

"You're supposed to be a teacher????" Um, no. That was two year ago. Try to keep up. Let me know if I'm going to fast for ya. I take it this was supposed to be some sort of insult. Cute. I once sat with an Inuit elder who taught me much about their life and culture. There is more to teaching and mentoring than writing a sentence the way you think it should be written. Please.

Swearing and name-calling our government just adds sooo much to public discourse. But take the coward's way out. Better to run your mouth than roll up your sleeves and do something about huh?

WWU,

Perhaps I said this before and forgot about it. Regardless, I'm saying it now and for ever. You're too fucking stupid for me to be wasting my time with you. After this reply to your latest dumbassery, I'll be deleting your brain farts unread.

"Coming from a racist your comments mean ever so much to me."

For all I know you might even believe your bullshit. But the fact of the matter is that you did, in fact, say that the people of Attawapiskat should stop complaining and stop blaming other people for their problems.

You said that. In some sort of being so stupid that you can't see your own craziness, you might not have meant that to appear ass-holish, but nonetheless it was.

Then you told them to get with the program and help plundering the planet like the First Nation at Ft. Mackay does. Turns out that in your ignorance and stupidity you didn't know that Attawapiskat did encourage corporate development. With DeBeers, and it might have contributed to their problems:

http://aptn.ca/pages/news/2011/12/13/de-beers-decision-to-dump-sewage-into-attawapiskat-played-role-in-current-housing-crisis/

"Yeah much better to focus on a badly-written sentence than to acknowledge that Right-wing governments hardly hold a monopoly on oppression."

This might come as a shock to you, but when your writing is so garbled that your meaning is completely obscured, there are consequences. Especially if you write so badly that you come across as a complete idiot, regardless of your intentions.

"Um, no. That was two year ago. Try to keep up. "

With the ups and downs of your career? You overestimate your importance to me. Regardless, the only way it's relevant that you're no longer a teacher would be if your writing abilities have gone right downhill since then. Then it wouldn't be an issue that today, you can't convey semi-complex ideas via the written word.

You described MacKenzie-King as a leftist in that sentence. Whatever you "meant to say" doesn't matter.

"Swearing and name-calling our government just adds sooo much to public discourse. But take the coward's way out. Better to run your mouth than roll up your sleeves and do something about huh? "

Again with this shit. Listen Kreskin, you don't have a clue, so shut-the-fuck-up. And as if your bullshit tuff-guy routine in my comments section is saving the world too.

You're just a mish-mash of stupid, ugly, confused ideas. You'll never learn because you're incapable. As such, you're a waste of anymore of my time. The time for debating with cretins like you is OVER.

Bye forever.

".....and then of course there's the Left's genius moment called Communism in the form of Communist Russia which killed God knows how many millions"

Where did the millions of dollars (back when that was real money) used to fund the Russian Revolution come from? Who paid for Trotsky to travel all the way from New York to Eastern Europe?

One of the things the Soviet Union did was damage the credibility of socialism and social democracy in Europe, since they are associated as being on the Left. It was more important for other European nations with greater industrialization to remain highly capitalistic than that Russia remain under the rule of the Tsar.

The Germans paid for Lenin to go back to Russia because they believed he'd help take a post-Tsarist Russia out of the war.

The Russian army had stopped fighting and the ruling class was completely discredited from the debacle of the nation's performance in WWI.

There had already been a revolution in 1905, and the Tsar had broken all his promises and gone back on all his concessions since then.

I'm not sure, but I think Trotsky got his supporters to pay for a cheap ticket on a freighter or something to get back to Europe following Lenin's coup.

For Churchill to have called Trotsky "the ogre of Europe" after having participated in the slaughter of the First World War though was the height of hypocrisy.
