"Ahhh! NORTH KOREA!!! That tiny country across the ocean! Maybe they'll get me!!" |
I get this crap on my blogger homepage every morning almost: "A battalion of North Korean soldiers decimated on the Russian front line (Zelensky)" So, I see the headline and I think: "So, this non-story is all based on the worthless testimony of former Ukrainian president Zelensky? Why bother? Why not CONFIRM whether or not Zelensky is telling the truth?"
Here's the story:
Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky claims that over the last two days of fighting in the Russian region of Kursk, the Kremlin's army has lost an infantry battalion made up of North Korean soldiers and Russian paratroopers.
In his evening address, the head of state said he had received this information from the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Oleksandr Sirsky, during a meeting on the situation in Kursk, which has been partially occupied by Kiev forces since last August and borders the Sumi region in northeastern Ukraine.
Specifically, during the battles on Saturday and Friday near a single village, the Russian army lost up to a battalion of infantry, including North Korean soldiers and Russian paratroopers,” he said in his message posted on social media.
A battalion can number between 300 and 1,500 soldiers.

I mean, what are we expected to DO with this crap?? First off: Zelensky's term of office ended. Ukraine is essentially a caretaker dictatorship, managing the country on NATO's behalf. Zelensky isn't "the head of state." He's an actor pretending to be the president. Second: Are we supposed to think that if Russia is "evil" and North Korea is "evil" that their working together is "evil squared" and we should all fall to our knees and pray to God to save the world from this pestilence? Meanwhile, the USA is giving Israel weapons to use to slaughter Palestinian children and they still remain the "good guys" and let's focus on the sheer evil that is Russia and North Korea? (And while we're at it, let's ignore that NATO personnel are fighting in Ukraine on Ukraine's NATO's behalf.) Finally, even if this unevidenced claim is true; So fucking what? Maybe "up to" 300 to 1,500 soldiers have been "decimated"? What does "decimated" mean? Fifty percent casualties? So, anywhere from 150 to 750 soldiers killed or wounded?
What are we supposed to DO with this story? Believe that Russia and North Korea are getting their asses kicked and that Ukraine's victory is just around the corner? (But somehow the hapless, incompetent Russian military might still conquer all of Europe if NATO doesn't put its troops in Latvia and Finland and what-not?)
Ukraine's quixotic propaganda exercise in Kursk is failing. It never distracted Putin from the campaign in the Donbas. All it did was weaken the Ukrainian defence in the Donbas as it diverted Ukraine's best troops and equipment. Some have even said that Putin has delayed pushing the Ukrainian invaders out of Kursk because keeping that sideshow open compelled the Ukrainian military dictatorship to continue to send resources to it.
That anyone continues to fall for such obvious propagandistic drivel is just sad.

Pet peeve: The word "decimated" is pretty much useless at this point because nobody who uses the word knows what it actually means. It means losing one soldier in 10, and is a word for a kind of punishment rarely issued to bodies of Roman troops. Nobody uses it to mean that, but I don't think people who use it know what they mean instead so now it's this shmoo of a word that means "Wow, lot casualties, many dead".
The thing is that for military people, losing one in ten in a short time is actually pretty dashed serious, so the old meaning would have been useful to people not wanting to use ignorant hyperbole, but now that sort of person can't use it.
Purple library guy,
Now that it's been explained to me it's so obvious!
Thanks!
