The July Crisis

Just in case you're a non-historian for whom that phrase means nothing:

US militarism, nuclear weapons, the holocaust, .... all of them the result of World War II.

What was the cause of World War II?

World War I.

Why did World War I start?

The July Crisis.

Here's the Wikipedia entry.

Here's another entry for no particular reason.

Here's a great book about the intellectual bankruptcy and the soaring idealistic delusions that led to it.

There.

There's lots going on the world today. But I thought I'd waste a few minutes talking about some stuff that created the world we're living in today.

"potassium cyanide to prevent his capture." sounds like an early version of the CIA to me...

That novel sounds intriguing. I've never heard of it or the author, Robert Musil and he certainly deserved better recognition given that his colleagues are household names: Mann, Kaftka and Rilke.

As for that July, there was lots of reluctance among the different allies but once they were in, the propaganda went into full tilt to sell the carnage that became WWI.

Beijing York,

I liked the book very much. A physical therapist of mine was reading it and I was intrigued. Then I saw if for a few hundred rupees when I went to India and just had to have it.

He despised Thomas Mann apparently. The wealthy boyfriend of Diotima is based on Mann.
