Yesterday I was out near Yonge and St. Clair and a large caravan of "FREEDOM!!!!" idiots were driving south, blaring their horns, waving their Canadian flags, with a lot of them also flying the flag of the Netherlands. I didn't recognize the flag and asked the driver of a pickup truck stopped at a red light what it was. I asked him why they were all flying that flag and he asked if I hadn't heard about the protests there. I said no. He told me to get on YouTube. The third most popular flag was "Fuck Trudeau."
Here's what the Dutch farmer protests are all about:
THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- Farmers protested around the Netherlands as lawmakers voted Tuesday on proposals to slash emissions of damaging pollutants, a plan that will likely force farmers to cut their livestock herds or stop work altogether.
The government says emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia, which livestock produce, must be drastically reduced close to nature areas that are part of a network of protected habitats for endangered plants and wildlife stretching across the 27-nation European Union.

The ruling coalition wants to cut emissions of pollutants, predominantly nitrogen oxide and ammonia, by 50% nationwide by 2030. Ministers call the proposal an “unavoidable transition” that aims to improve air, land and water quality.
They warn that farmers will have to adapt or face the prospect of shuttering their businesses.
“The honest message ... is that not all farmers can continue their business,” and those who do will likely have to farm differently, the government said in a statement this month as it unveiled emission reduction targets.
Livestock produce ammonia in their urine and feces. The government in the past has called on farmers to use feed for their animals that contains less protein as a way of reducing ammonia emissions. The problem is compounded in the Netherlands, which is known for its intensive farming practices, with large numbers of livestock kept on small areas of land.
It is not only farmers being targeted. In the past, the government also has cut the national maximum speed limit on highways from 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour) to 100 kmh during the day as a way of reducing nitrogen oxide created by vehicle engines.

Farmers argue that they are being unfairly targeted as polluters while other industries, such as aviation, construction and transport, also are contributing to emissions and face less far-reaching rules. They also say the government is not giving them a clear picture of their futures amid the proposed reforms.
I find it chilling that these imbeciles are now making common cause with Dutch farmers on this issue. Because these same childish "FREEDOM!!!" ranters have always seen Global Warming as a liberal scam whose sole purpose is to give the state more power. Global Warming is a scam. COVID-19 is a scam. Now they're deciding to make policies meant to mitigate global warming as yet another excuse to have their rallies.
Why are they having their parades and get-togethers and buying church properties in Ottawa and elsewhere? Because the rallying and the flag-waving are part of their movement. It's how they keep their enthusiasm. Their adrenaline. There's big money behind this too. (And lots and lots of small donors.) This is incipient fascism. That's the reason for all the RALLIES.
And what's really sickening is that they're so obviously wrong. Global Warming is real. And it will kill us all if not addressed seriously. The heatwaves in Europe; the fires in the western USA, British Columbia, the French interior, Australia; the melting glaciers; the snowless mountaintops; the drying lakes. It's real. But these fucking stupid assholes continue to believe it's all a hoax.
COVID-19 is real. It's killed millions of people around the world and tens of thousands here in Canada. Our hospitals have been overwhelmed and our healthcare system is collapsing. But these absolute idiots refuse to accept this. Telling people to wear masks in public place when there's a repiratory viral pandemic raging is just arbitrary tyranny.
Of course these shit-heads tend to agree with the GBWT. The policies (based on fraud) of mass surveillance, arrest and indefinite detention without charges, the use of torture and the ability to use testimony obtained via torture, .... this never got these "FREEDOM!!!" lovers too excited. Probably because these people genuinely believe that Muslims were invading Canada and using multiculturalism and anti-hate laws and the welfare system to take us over and subject us all to Sharia Law and the GBWT would supposedly put a stop to that. Because these people are often shit-head racists.
I get that sometimes we don't want to debate with ideas that appear unworthy of the attention debating them would cause. But this has gotten out of hand. Of course I just remembered that asshole liberals like Trudeau are happy to see this denialist movement flourish and prosper. Because its existence gives them an excuse not to do anything. Because our short-sighted oligarchy doesn't want them to do anything. Oligarchs are behind this.
